“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude in any set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Inyengar Yoga

My journey into the world of Iyengar Yoga began in the heart of India, where I had the privilege of studying under the guidance of Karin O’Bannon, an esteemed American Iyengar teacher. In the serene surroundings of Parmath Niketan Ashram, I embarked on a 200-hour Yoga Alliance certification program, over four enriching months. This experience, under the tutelage of Karin, ignited the flame of Yoga within me and laid the foundation for my lifelong commitment to this ancient practice.

Before going to India, my relationship with movement had taken various forms, from Pilates to Kick Boxing and sporadic encounters with Yoga. Born with an S-curve scoliosis, I sought solace in movement to nurture my spine. Upon returning from India, inspired and invigorated, I ventured into teaching Yoga. However, the vastness of this discipline urged me to deepen my understanding and refine my skills.

Driven by this quest for knowledge, I embarked on the Iyengar training in Manchester. The path demanded two years of dedicated practice under an Iyengar teacher before formal training could commence. Under the guidance of Christina Nieowla in Cheshire, I completed my introductory training over two further years. This marked the beginning of my journey as an Introductory teacher within the Iyengar system.

The Iyengar training, with its emphasis on alignment and ethics, proved to be a precious gift. It demanded the cultivation of a personal practice and intuitive development within Yoga, resisting the quick production of teachers. Four additional exams later, I earned the designation of an Intermediate teacher, a testament to the rigorous and authentic nature of the Iyengar system.

B.K.S. Iyengar and his family served as profound guides throughout my journey. The meticulous focus on detail and body awareness in Iyengar Yoga reconnected me to my body, fostering concentration and quieting the mind. Through this practice, I discovered the gateway to meditation, a profound aspect of my transformative journey.

Yoga has become an integral part of my daily routine, a lifeline during challenging times. When I was diagnosed with cancer, the gift of Yoga accompanied me through chemotherapy, offering solace and support.

“The light that yoga sheds on life is something special. It is transformative. It does not change the way we see things: it transforms the person who sees” BKS Iyengar
